Winter 2017 Luncheon – VADM James G Foggo, III (Director of Navy Staff)
26 January 2017 – Over 60 members and guests gathered for the winter meeting and luncheon at the Army Navy Country Club (ANCC) in Arlington, VA including fifteen midshipmen from the US Naval Academy. VADM James G. Foggo III, Director of the Navy Staff in the Pentagon and former Commander 6th Fleet was the featured speaker.
The meeting opened with the pledge of allegiance and recognition of a number of attendees including LT Alberto Ramos (Chapter USNA representative) and MIDN 1/C Megan Hartman (President of the USNA Dolphin Club). CDR Wes Bringham was announced as temporary Chapter Vice President (VP) in advance of formal elections this spring. CDR Bringham recently relieved current VP, CDR Sean Huey, as the OPNAV N97 Executive Assistant. The hand-off of the VP duties was necessitated as CDR Huey’s new position would interfere with his time to serve the Chapter.
VADM James G. Foggo III, Director of the Naval Staff was introduced and provided a presentation centered on his recent experiences as Commander 6th Fleet and Deputy Commander, U.S. Naval Forces Europe and Africa. The Admiral referenced his recent Proceeding article “The Fourth Battle of the Atlantic” which fed into his thoughts on the Russian Navy. He also addressed “radicals” in the region to include observations on Daesh (a term the Admiral explained as the appropriate way to refer to the group that others call ISIS or ISIL). It was a very thoughtful and relevant presentation that was lauded by all attendees and led to an engaging number of Q&A’s. VADM Foggo was presented the Chapter’s speaker medallion in appreciation and he joined Chapter President Brad Kratovil in presenting MIDN 1/C Hartman and LT Ramos with a donation from the Chapter to support the Dolphin Club’s continuing efforts to expose USNA midshipmen to different speakers and events focused on undersea warfare and the submarine force. The spring luncheon is tentatively scheduled for Friday, 28 April 2017 and will feature CAPT John Newton, PMS 399 and CAPT Chad Muse, PMS 340. They will conduct a dual brief on Naval Special Warfare discussing their respective programs and what lies ahead for how the submarine force will continue to support and enable special forces from under the sea. Tim Oliver, NSL Executive Director, asked for volunteers to man the NSL table at the upcoming Sea Air Space Symposium 3-5 April.
The meeting was closed with a prayer.
Some of these books were mentioned during his lecture.
